U.S. To Regain Control Of War Games With South Korea

US To Retake Control Of S Korea War Games Amid Tensions -- Times Of India

SEOUL: US forces will regain control over a major annual military exercise with South Korea amid rising tensions with the North following the sinking of one of Seoul's warships, officials said on Thursday.

Seoul's defence ministry said the Combined Forces Command led by US General Walter Sharp will retake control of the computerised war game called Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) from this year.

In 2008 and last year the South's military took control of the exercise, to prepare for a scheduled transfer of wartime command in the military alliance.

My Comment: Everyone is jumpy and nervous with the military situation on the Korean peninsula .... but why give command back to the Americans?

Hmmmm .... I can't figure this one out.

Well, didn't they find that there was a spy ring in the RoK upper command, which had passed on defense plans? They're either deliberately changing who's in charge to change plans so that stolen intel isn't useful, or making it look like they're doing that.

Other possibilities include an actual belief that US military command is more competent, and/or the hope that they can blame anything that goes wrong on the Americans.

That is so true. When a 2-star general is implicated in such an espionage case, everything must then be suspected.

As to competency .... the Americans are competent (I grant them that), but I am starting to believe that it may be more a lack of confidence from the South Korean political (not military) side on the abilities of the South Korean arm forces.

The sinking of the Cheonan naval ship was a huge shock to the South Korean political leadership .... putting into doubt the ability of their forces to counter any North Korean aggression.
