North Korea Blasts Naval Drills, U.S. Sanctions -- Global Security Newswire

North Korea today strongly criticized upcoming U.S.-South Korean naval drills and a new round of unilateral sanctions from Washington as being destabilizing for the region, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, July 21).

This weekend's large-scale military maneuvers are intended as a warning against future North Korean armed hostilities, according to Obama administration officials. Seoul and Washington have accused Pyongyang of killing 46 sailors in a March submarine attack on a South Korean naval ship. The aspiring nuclear power has claimed innocence and warned it would respond with military force if it is punished for the sinking of the Cheonan.
