The Ministry of Defence is a “Byzantine” department detached from reality, whose officials prioritised victory in Iraq and Afghanistan only after an “away day” years into both conflicts, it is claimed today.
Gen Sir Richard Dannatt, the former head of the Army, criticises MoD bureaucrats and Labour ministers for forcing troops to “muddle through” with inadequate plans and equipment.
In a memoir serialised by The Daily Telegraph, Gen Dannatt accuses Gordon Brown of sending troops to their deaths by refusing to fund Labour’s wars adequately. In today’s extract he turns his sights on Whitehall.
