Parliamentary Elections May Be Cancelled In Kyrgyzstan Because Of Violence

Otunbayeva Threatens To Cancel Elections If Violence Erupts -- Central Asia Newswire

Kyrgyzstan may cancel next month’s groundbreaking parliamentary elections and declare a state of emergency if violence erupts, the local media reported on Tuesday.

Interim Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva delivered the warning at a political forum in the capital Bishkek the same day.

"The constitution gives me the right, as president of the country, to take the most severe measures. If there's a question over the country's unity, we can certainly introduce a state of emergency and the elections can be stopped," the Agence-France Presse (AFP) news agency cited Otunbayeva as saying.
