Afghan Poll Figures Fiddled 'To Cover Fall In Voting’ -- The Telegraph

Afghan election officials were accused on Sunday of massaging turnout figures to suggest that voting numbers had risen since last year’s flawed presidential poll.

Numbers in the weekend’s parliamentary elections fell by nearly a fifth, compared with last year.

But Fazil Ahmad Manawi, the head of the Independent Election Commission, said turnout this year had been 40 per cent, compared with 33 per cent last year. He based his percentage not on the total electoral roll but on figures for the number of polling stations that had opened.
