Nato Meets To Lay The Groundwork For Next Month's General Meeting

NATO Antimissile Plan Seen Gaining Momentum -- Global Security Newswire

NATO member nations appear set to endorse a plan to unify their existing antimissile systems under a new, alliance-wide shield that would include land- and sea-based interceptors deployed by the United States, the Washington Post quoted U.S. and NATO officials as saying yesterday (see GSN, Oct. 14).

The countries are expected to determine at a summit next month in Lisbon, Portugal, whether to formally include missile defense among NATO's objectives, clearing the way for the project. Washington last year announced it was scrapping a Bush-era program for long-range missile defense in favor of a "phased adaptive approach" that would field sea- and land-based versions of the Standard Missile 3 interceptor around Europe as a hedge against Iranian short- and medium-range missiles.
