Some U.S. Military History For A Saturday Afternoon.

America's First Pentagon -- Washington Examiner

When the topic of discussion is military based, the titles Pentagon and Department of Defense have become synonymous. As impressive as DoD’s home is, however, it is not the first American military structure built in the five-sided shape.

On Castle Island in Boston Harbor sits a granite star which is the oldest continuously fortified site in the United States to have British origin. Built in 1634, it was an earthen structure, relatively primitive in design with a cannon used as a source of coastal defense for Boston. After falling into disrepair, the structure was rebuilt of timber in the 1640s. By now, the fort was armed with six saker cannons and three additional smaller guns.
