Fl. Lt. Fortune's bird at the time of his wounding is the helo with the greatest amount of wartime experience in the RAF. It served in the Falklands and was the only aircraft to survive the Argentine Exocet strike against Atlantic Conveyor. For a time it was the only heavy lift helo available to UK forces in the Falklands. It nearly wore out and actually survived a water landing (make that a crash). Chinook ZA718 aka Bravo November (BN) has now had four pilots earn the DFC. Its continued survival is a testament to its basic design and rather miraculous good 'fortune'.
