Germany To End Conscription


Germany Plans To Suspend Conscription From July -- The Telegraph

Germany's defence minister said on Monday that the government aimed to suspend military conscription from July 1 next year, calling it "responsible and right".

Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, Germany's most popular politician, also confirmed he wants to slash the 250,000-strong military to 180,000-185,000 to cut spending and meet 21st century security threats more effectively.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, flanking zu Guttenberg at the same military event in Dresden, said that the restructuring could "be a symbol of the readiness to change and the need to change in our country."
