Senator: Web Censorship Bill A ‘Bunker-Busting Cluster Bomb’ -- Epicenter
The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA, S.3804) sets up a system through which the US government can blacklist a pirate website from the Domain Name System, ban credit card companies from processing US payments to the site, and forbid online ad networks from working with the site. My Comment: I knew that this was coming down .... I have been predicting it for years. This is the ultimate weapon for the U.S. government to get rid of a web site (or web sites) that they may disagree with and/or may deem as a security threat. They are using the threat of rogue websites and the infringement of copyright as the reason for pursuing such legislation .... but many users of the web (myself included) see a deeper and more sinister agenda. This is a blatant attempt from the U.S. Government to regulate as much of the internet as possible, and to impose their value system (and the wishes of their supporters) on a system that has been unregulated for years. What surprises me is that they are doing it so overtly, and making it known to the world that they are preparing legislation that will give them the legal authority to essentially control the internet.
From a U.S. national security and copyright enforcement point of view this makes perfect sense. But other countries are taking notice, and they do not like what they are seeing .... correction .... they are DEEPLY concerned with what is happening. They will react to this attempt by the U.S. Government to control the web .... and in some cases .... I predict ..... they will probably start laying the groundwork for a web that is different from what we have been accustomed to.
