China's Rush To Develop Strategic Relations With Key Oil Producers

In the first half of 2010, China’s crude oil imports climbed by nearly 30% over the same period for the previous year. At this pace, the U.S. Energy Information Administration hast estimated that China will import almost 75% of its crude oil by 2035. The Middle East is the largest source of China’s crude oil imports, according to FACTS Global Energy.

In 1999, Sergei Troush, a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies, argued that China’s rapidly rising demand for Middle Eastern oil would inevitably force it to challenge the United States for regional influence.

My Comment: I do not know if China was on the mind of the U.S. when they invaded Iraq in 2003 .... but in 2010 China is making it very clear that they have every intention to form strategic partnerships with many oil producers .... Iraq being one of them.
