The Countdown For Independence Is Now Underway In South Sudan



Southern Sudan's Independence Vote Credible, Met Standards, Observers Say -- Bloomberg

Southern Sudan’s referendum last week on whether to secede from Sudan was “credible and well organized,” the European Union observer mission said.

The week-long vote, which ended Jan. 15, was “a peaceful, credible voting process,” Veronique de Keyser, the mission’s chief observer, told reporters in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, where the group today published its preliminary findings. Turnout was “significantly in excess of the 60 percent required” to validate the vote, she said.

For anybody who didn't read it, may I recommend an excellent article in January/February Foreign Affairs which discusses the dynamics of this situation. It offers an interesting perspective on the power of economic interdependence as a means of keeping the peace between the North and the South
