Afghan Peace council Risks Angering US By Demanding release Of Taliban Leader Khairullah Khairkhwa From Guantanamo -- The Telegraph

A peace council appointed by Afghanistan's president has stepped into confrontation with America by demanding the release of a top Taliban leader from Guantanamo Bay to precipitate talks.

The demand that Khairullah Khairkhwa is released has emerged as the first formal recommendations from the High Peace Council.

Khairkhwa was an interior minister, then governor of one of Afghanistan's largest cities before the Taliban were toppled.
