AMMAN, Jordan—Hundreds of Jordanians staged peaceful antigovernment protests on Friday, urging the country's newly-appointed prime minister to make good on promises of political reform.
The demonstrations went ahead despite assurances from Jordan's King Abdullah II that his new Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit would enact measures to fight corruption and liberalize the political system. The king gave the assurances in a rare meeting Thursday with representatives of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and its political wing, the Islamic Action Front.
