BAGHDAD: Without announcement or debate, Iraqi authorities have quietly ordered the reconstruction of one of the most audacious symbols in Baghdad of Saddam Hussein's oppressive rule: the Hands of Victory crossed swords, clutched in hands modelled after Saddam's own..

An Iraqi-born author and architect, Kanan Makiya, called the monument ''Nuremberg and Las Vegas all rolled in one''.

After years of neglect and a partial dismantling in 2007 that was halted amid protests, workers recently began to put the monument back together.

My Comment: Personally .... I would not restore it. But then again .... I am not an Iraqi.
