My Comment:
I have a farm in the Eastern Townships of Quebec that is only 5 miles from the U.S. border. Border security .... it is there, but now as pervasive and secured as they would like to say it is. Over the years I have heard many stories of people freely going back and forth (especially on the Indian reservations that straddle both borders), and they have never being confronted by U.S. or Canadian border officials.
