In Russia, Gates Stresses Cooperation With West -- New York Times

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Even as American military forces continued attacks on Libya, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates traveled Monday to this historic Russian capital built by Peter the Great as the czar’s “window on the west.”

Mr. Gates delayed his departure from Washington by a day to monitor the start of the Libya mission. But he then chose to carry on with his fourth and final visit to Russia as defense secretary, with a mission here to open just a bit wider a window for the west onto modern Russia’s military.
