Syrian Forces Surround Baniyas -- Al Jazeera

Tanks and troops deployed to restive coastal town as government claims army has completed its operation in Deraa.


Syrian security forces appear to be increasing their presence around the coastal town of Baniyas even as the government claimed the army had ended its operations in Deraa, a focal point for protests that has been besieged for nearly two weeks.

An activist, who remains anonymous for his own safety, told Al Jazeera in a phone interview from Baniyas that the Syrian government was continuing to reinforce its forces, tanks and surveillance on Thursday.
