With their touch screens, downloadable apps and built in cameras they have already taken over life on the high street.
But now the all conquering smart phone could be coming to the battlefield - as the U.S. army begins testing the devices for combat readiness.
It is hoped the tests, using a range of iPhone, Android and other devices, will enable soldiers to evaluate the ruggedness and portability of the smart-phone for the 21st century soldier.
