France To Pull Out 1,000 Troops From Afghanistan By 2012 End -- RTT News

Following on the lead given by its ally the United States last month, France will pull out one fourth of its troops from war-torn Afghanistan by the end of 2012.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy made the announcement on Tuesday while on a surprise visit to a military base north of the Afghan capital Kabul, his third visit to the country as President.

"We will pull out a quarter of our contingent, which is to say 1,000 soldiers, between now and the end of 2012," Sarkozy said while addressing French troops serving as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

"It's necessary to end the war," he said.
