(CNN) -- Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates has signed a two-book deal with Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, the company said Tuesday.

"We are delighted to be publishing Robert Gates," said Sonny Mehta, chairman and editor-in-chief of the publishing group. Gates, who served as defense secretary from 2006 to 2011 under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, will write a memoir and a book on leadership, Mehta said in a news release. The memoir will be published in 2013 and the other book will be published in 2014, he said.
