End Of An Era: Space Shuttle Atlantis Launched -- Miami Herald

Astronauts head into space on the final shuttle take-off, the last launch in a 30-year program.

CAPE CANAVERAL -- Atlantis left Friday for her 33rd trip to space.

But as Atlantis’ logo reflects — it’s Omega, last letter of the Greek alphabet — this is the end of line, the last flight for NASA’s 30-year space shuttle program. After 293 days in space, Atlantis will log 12 more and then call it quits.

With a dramatic roar and rumble, Atlantis left 2 ½ minutes late, at 11:29 a.m. After days of relentless rain, the skies cleared Friday morning for the launch.
