Aid Agencies Fear bloodbath In Sudan As The South Prepares For Independence -- The Daily Mail

Human rights officials called for a protection force in Christian South Sudan to prevent a massacre when it becomes independent from the hardline Muslim north tomorrow.

Despite being one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world and desperately poor, the south is potentially rich in oil and could face threats to its borders.

Oxfam has expressed concern that a UN peacekeeping force expected to be 7,000 strong will be too small and leave the region unable to protect itself.
