It was reported on Monday that the CIA tried a creative strategy to confirm Osama bin Laden’s existence in his Abbottabad compound: a fake immunization project. Operatives hired a doctor, Shakil Afridi, to offer hepatitis B vaccines to the people in the town, including, CIA agents hoped, bin Laden’s children. The agency wanted to compare the children’s DNA with known DNA from bin Laden’s sister, thus confirming that bin Laden was hiding in the compound. It was the stuff of spy novels, and certainly not the first time the CIA has been so creative (if not wise or successful). Here are examples of the CIA’s more imaginative plots.
