After a chemical munitions facility used to produce nerve gas and other chemical agents was revealed in 1988, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi began construction of an underground facility constructed outside Tarhunah, said to store or manufacture mustard gas. Pentagon and British intel officials fear Moammar Khadafy could launch chemical weapons and missile attacks on his own people - and Europe - in a last-ditch act of vengeance.
"You can't anticipate everything the Khadafy regime will do," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC, London's Telegraph newspaper reported Tuesday.
"They are a vicious regime. They are in their death throes. There are people still out there. That's why we can't rule out any of those things.
"These are still difficult and dangerous times in Libya. There are many weapons out there."
