How Obama Learned About the Afghan Tragedy -- ABC News

A White House official tells ABC News that President Obama was notified about the tragedy in Afghanistan last night shortly after 8 pm ET by National Security Advisor Tom Donilon.

The president is spending his weekend at Camp David with his family.

Later in the evening, before going to sleep, the president again spoke to Donilon and received a paper update on what happened. This morning, the president received another paper update before issuing his own statement.

At 10:30 am ET, President Obama was briefed on the incident on a secure conference call by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Admiral Mike Mullen, Donilon, Chief of Staff Bill Daley and other national security staffers.

At this point, the president has not spoken to any of the families of the victims, the official says.
