Libyan Rebels Capture Moammar Khadafy's Compound, Dicator's 42-Year-Reign Nears End -- New York Daily news

Jubilant Libyan rebels swarmed into Col. Moammar Khadafy's fortified compound Tuesday, shooting guns in the air and climbing on his iconic statue of a giant golden fist crushing an American jet.

Aref Nayed, a spokesman for the rebel governing council, proclaimed "total victory" with the capture of Khadafy's power base.

However, Khadafy himself remained at large, and sudden bursts of gunfire from hidden snipers periodically scattered rebels as they walked through Khadafy's lush landscaped grounds.

But the rebels kept coming.
