Until now, none of the major candidates for the US presidency have had direct experience with US military and security policy. Of course, all the Republican candidates have opinions on the subject, but their worldview is gleaned second-hand from a small corps of Republican national security experts – most of whom have no experience of military service.
Texas governor Rick Perry’s entry into the race dramatically changes the dynamics of the debates on national security issues. His personal background makes the difference: when Rick Perry graduated from Texas A and M in 1972 he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Air Force, completed the pilot training program and became a C-130 transport pilot. He served five years as an officer, flew thousands of hours and left the military as a captain in 1977 to return to the family farming business in Texas.

My Comment: An interesting tid-bit on his character .... but I doubt that his experience of serving in the US military will resonate with the American electorate come election time.
