Qaddafi Strongholds Come Under Attack -- New York Times
BANI WALID, Libya — Forces aligned with the provisional Libyan government fought their way Friday into two cities still held by fighters loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, in a bid to end weeks of standoff around the fugitive former leader’s remaining strongholds.
In this desert town south of the capital of Tripoli, the anti-Qaddafi forces moved early in the morning, with dozens of pickup trucks laden with heavy weapons spearheading a move through residential areas into the heart of the city. In what a spokesman called an “all-out battle,” they managed to establish positions there, the fighters said, before being forced to retreat later in the day before a barrage of mortars, rockets and sniper fire. At least six fighters were killed.
