David Petraeus, the retired U.S. commander who directed American strategy in the Afghan and Iraq wars, is to be appointed the head of the CIA.

Former general Petraeus will be sworn in as the 20th director of the U.S. spy agency following a 37-year career in the army.

The well-connected 58-year-old was one of America's most influential officers and is widely credited with salvaging the Iraq war when he took over U.S. forces in 2007.
