14:17 (09:17) The Palestinian bid comes at a time when Israel faces growing isolation from the Arab World. Last month Turkey’s government threw out Israel’s ambassador and downgraded diplomatic ties. Then, this month, Israeli diplomats in Egypt were forced to flee when their embassy was attacked by demonstrators.

More recently still, Israeli diplomats, fearing similar assaults, temporarily quit Jordan, the other Arab country with which Israel has a peace treaty.
