Why U.K. Foreign Secretary Hague Spoke Out On MI6
In lifting the veil a little from MI6, William Hague reminds us of the vital role it plays in national defence.
The Foreign Secretary William Hague’s speech about MI6 yesterday attracted widespread attention, particularly because of his revelation that a number of MI6 agents had been killed in the course of their work. This is not, in fact, new.
When MI6 was created in 1909, it did not spring fully formed into an espionage vacuum. Germany, France and Russia all had permanent and active secret services. Britain did not but, typically, it spied in an ad hoc sort of way via naval and military intelligence and occasionally other organisations, as and when required.
