Will Iran Step Into Iraq As U.S. Forces Leave?

As U.S. Prepares To Leave Iraq, Iran's Shadow Looms Large -- L.A. Times

U.S. military officials warn that Iran will fill the vacuum created after American troops depart. They are recommending several moves in response, including shifting some of those troops to Kuwait.

As the last U.S. troops pack up to leave Iraq by the end of next month, Pentagon officials and senior military commanders are warning that Iran will rush to fill a power vacuum created by the American exit unless Washington limits its pullback from the region.

My Comment: I do expect the Iranians to try and influence Iraq by stepping into the vacuum that the Americans have created with their withdrawal. I say go for it .... because as bad as Iraq may have been for America, I suspect that it will be even worse for Iran's Persians.

you forget that Iraq was so bad for the US Because(!!) of Iran's IED and money supply.. without Iran's messing around, it would have been much easier for the US.. so my guess is Iran will not have much difficulties.. no combat engagement rules in addition..

Thank you Mark for your comment. Yup ... Iran messed up Iraq quite a bit for U.S. forces and our allies. But Sunni factions, coupled with Kurds, coupled with Al Qaeda .... this has all the ingredients of becoming very very bad. Iran's allies in Iraq will try their best .... but being alone will not guarantee success.

If Iran gets involved directly, they will be limited by a lack of resources. But you are right that they will make up for it with no combat engagement rules in addition.
