President Obama: Military 'The Most Respected Institution In America' -- The Telegraph

President Barack Obama praised US troops on their way home from Iraq on Saturday, declaring they deserved to return to a better, united country when they arrive.

"There's a reason our military is the most respected institution in America. They don't see themselves or each other as Democrats first or Republicans first. They see themselves as Americans first," said President Obama.

Earlier in the week, the President met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to mark the end of the Iraq war as the last American troops prepared to leave by 31 December. More than 1.5 million troops served in Iraq of which nearly 4,500 Americans were killed and about 32,000 were wounded in the course of the eight-year deployment.
