Protests Continue And Spreading In Kazakhstan


After Bloody Clashes, Kazakh Protests Continue -- New York Times

MOSCOW — Several hundred people took to the streets in western Kazakhstan on Monday to protest against a bloody police crackdown on antigovernment demonstrations that has caused dozens of casualties.

The authorities have put the death toll at 14 after three days of violent clashes between the police and striking workers. Witnesses and human rights workers have said the number of dead could be many times higher. Scores more have reportedly been injured.

In an apparent effort to ease tensions, Kazakhstan’s prime minister on Monday announced the formation of a government commission to investigate the violence and address the grievances of the striking workers, the Russian news agency, Interfax, reported.
