Effective Afghan Police Force 'Decades Away', Warns Top Cop -- The Australian

AFGHANISTAN'S new police force is decades away from being able to operate effectively, one of Australia's top police officers has warned.

Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Frank Prendergast said the AFP remained committed to its role training Afghan police, but the task was "very, very complex".

"Police reform is generally a very long-term task particularly where you have a police force being built from scratch," he said.

"It is exacerbated in Afghanistan particularly by the problems of illiteracy the lack of institutional strength, issues such as corruption, the narcotics problem and particularly the insurgency."
