The West's Naval Supremacy Will Overwhelm Iran's Small Navy

Iran Is No Match For The West's Naval Supremacy -- Con Coughlin, The Telegraph

How reassuring to see the West sending an armada of warships through the Strait of Hormuz as a warning to Iran not to meddle with one of the world's most important trade routes. HMS Argyll, a Type 23 Royal Navy frigate, joined forces with the American and French navies to issue a clear statement of intent to Tehran that the Western powers will not allow Tehran to follow through on its recent bellicose threats to close the Strait.

The reason the Iranians have suddenly started making threats about the Strait, through which flow a goodly proportion of the West's oil and gas supplies, is their concern about the likely impact a new round of EU sanctions, which are due to be announced today, will have on their country's already struggling economy.

My Comment: I am sure the Iranians know that their navy is no match when pitted against the West. This is why I doubt their threats on closing the Straits of Hormuz .... it will only be a short term measure with severe military consequences. The purpose of issuing these threats is to reassure their own supporters in Iran that they are standing up to the international community, and that they will not waver in their resolve. It is their domestic audience that they are playing to .... not to us in the West.
