Rioters armed with petrol bombs and sledgehammers clashed with police in Athens today as unions launched a two-day general strike against a fresh wave of austerity measures.
Scores of youths, in hoods and gas masks, smashed up marble paving stones in the Greek capital's main Syntagma Square before hurling the rubble at riot police, who responded with tear gas.
Some officers were set alight as demonstrators attacked them with petrol bombs.
