Is Britain's Version Of The National Guard Ready For War?

Senior sources believe that of the so called 16,272 "regular attendees" only a third, around 5,400, would be suitable for frontline service in a future war Photo: PA

Territorial Army Not Fit For New Role, Warn Generals -- The Telegraph

Plans to drastically cut the Army will harm the nation's defences because they rely on poorly-trained part-time soldiers, senior officers have warned.

Senior Army sources have spoken of their increasing concern that the Territorial Army is "not fit for purpose" and will leave Britain's ability to defend itself hamstrung.

The decision to slash the regular army from 100,000 to 82,000 troops - a plan known as "Future Force 2020" - is based on the TA taking an increasing role in frontline duties.

The TA would be expected to expand in number to 36,000 part-timers, and fight in battle shoulder to shoulder with the regular army.

My Comment: Weekend warriors can never match regular soldiers .... the British Generals are just stating the obvious.

Not true.

My 'weekend warrior' Army Reserve aviation unit, at half-strength - out-flew, out-hauled, out-maintained, and out-performed the active duty US Marines for a YEAR in Iraq. Our aircrews outperformed every regular Army unit in theater. Our maintenance personnel VASTLY outperformed every other unit in theater - and we won the awards to prove it.

Our aircrews outperformed the regular Army aviation units in several emergency situations here in CONUS as well over the past years and our troops greatly outperformed the regular Army units we trained with at JRTC; to the point that it was embarrassing during the AARs.

Don't forget - 'Weekend Warriors' bring an entire additional skill-set to the fight from our widely varied civilian jobs. Our battle drill will not be as initially polished as the full timers but given a couple of months to train up under the tutelage of the regulars (which we get during pre-deployment), we can definitely match - and even exceed the regulars.

It's the UNIT, not the Reserve/Active status that matters.

Good point Orion, I stand corrected. But the Generals still disagree with you.

With all due respect, these are the same General officers who have overseen the nearly complete destruction of the British military.

Just as an aside, I absolutely LOVE your blog and am very appreciative of all the work you put into it! This is one of my constant feeds and is an invaluable resource to me.

Respectfully,

Orion
