Is Iran About To Send Special Forces To Syria?



Iran To Send 15,000 Elite Special-Ops To Syria – Reports -- Eurasia Review

The regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria is expecting up to 15,000 Iranian troops to help maintain order in the country’s provinces, a Chinese newspaper reports. Iran has yet to confirm or deny the news.

According to the central Chinese daily Renmin Ribao, the Iranian special task troops are due to be deployed in Syria’s key provinces.

The Syrian opposition announced earlier that commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, Qassem Suleimani, advises the Syrian authorities on quashing the country’s opposition movement, the Telegraph newspaper reports.

My Comment: If the story is true .... which I doubt .... it would mean a major escalation in the Shiite - Sunni conflict not only in Syria, but in the Middle East as a whole. In the meantime .... Syria: Iran's elite Quds force 'advising Assad regime'.

Not sure if this is accurate - the total of known Quds Force personnel is around 15,000.

The second story is likely more true; there have been reports of senior Quds Force members present in Syria, with even more senior members to arrive.

There is no reason to doubt Iranian presence/influence in Syria although the cited number of 15K is obviously inflated.

Regardless, I would have a heavy heart were I any of those troops when reminded of what happened in Libya to the outsiders.
