This is a year in the life of Russia, as seen by its keenest photographers.

The country may be in the midst of a fractious period, with widespread civil unrest over Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's plans to return as President at next month's polls.

But this showcase of astonishing photographs reveals the beauty, and also the chronic poverty, endured by its 143 million citizens.

My Comment:
This is not a war/defense related post, but regular readers of this blog know that my nationality is Russian, and that even though I am now a Canadian citizen living in Quebec (and I love being a Canadian), my ties to the old country are still there.

These pictures of Russia sums up perfectly what life is like over there today. Extreme poverty mixed with extreme wealth. Old mixed with new. Cold winters and humid summers.

Sighhh ....

I will be in Russia/Ukraine this summer for at least a month. Looking forward to .... yes .... going back home for a while and trying my best to size up what is happening there, and how it will affect us in the West.
