More than 200 people have been killed by Syrian forces after a barrage of mortars and artillery was unleashed on the battered city of Homs overnight.
Activists claim the military carried out a night of shelling on the city in the latest clash to come in the country's 11-month-old uprising calling for an end President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The Syrian regime has denied the assault - accusing activists of engaging in a 'hysterical' propaganda campaign - while countries around the world spoke out against the atrocity.
Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the use of tanks and mortars in civilian areas while the Barrack Obama administration urged for a UN resolution backing Arab League calls for the end of Bashar al-Assad's rule to be passed.

My Comment: Even if the UN resolution had passed, the Assad regime in Syria would not have given up power. However .... it is a moral defeat for the rebels because this veto only emboldens Assads closest supporters and his allies to continue the fight .... a fight that I believe they will eventually lose by the end of this year.
