Panetta: US Will Act Against Iran If It Has To -- YNet News

US secretary of defense tells AIPAC US willing to mount military campaign to prevent Iran from realizing nuclear ambitions.

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta spoke before the AIPAC conference on Tuesday and vowed that the United States would take military action to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon if diplomacy fails.

"We want diplomacy to work, we will back the diplomacy with strong and increasing pressure, we will keep all options – including military action – on the table to prevent (Iran) from obtaining a nuclear weapon," Panetta told the pro-Israel lobbying group. "Military action is the last alternative when all else fails, but make no mistake, we will act if we have to."

My Comment: What's my take on the possibility of a U.S. military strike against Iran .... I need to see the following to know that the U.S. is now serious on such an option. (1) The positioning of 4-5 carrier strike groups near Iran. (2) US minesweepers sent to the region. (3) A build-up of air assets in the Gulf states and in Afghanistan. (4) The B-2s are in the air. (5) Congressional notification and approval. (6) Worldwide terror alerts and preparation.

But even if these assets are in play and/or in position .... I still do not see an American military strike against Iran. This is a Presidential election year, and with the American public luke warm on any new war .... the political will to launch such a military strike and to deal with the consequences afterwards are simply not there.
