Pope Benedict XVI and Fidel Castro discussed world issues, other topics at meeting. Cuba has begun to release dissidents detained in advance of pope’s visit, opposition groups report.

HAVANA -- Pope Benedict XVI’s private meeting with former Cuban ruler Fidel Castro on Wednesday at the Apostolic Nunciature in Havana lasted about 30 minutes while the men discussed world issues, the Catholic church’s new liturgies and “the problems of humanity,’’ a Vatican spokesman said.
