Military Topples Guinea-Bissau Government -- Wall Street Journal

DAKAR, Senegal—The armed forces of Guinea-Bissau, widely accused of trafficking Latin American cocaine through their tiny West African nation, overthrew a floundering transitional government on Friday, dealing another blow for democracy in the region.

Soldiers fired mortars into the ex-Portuguese colony's cobblestone capital, according to witnesses and local media reports. Then they ransacked the home and various businesses of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes, Jr., the frontrunner favored to win the presidential election scheduled just two weeks from the coup.
