France Goes To The Polls For First Round Of Presidential Elections -- The Telegraph
France's 44.5 million-strong electorate has begun voting in presidential elections likely to see Nicolas Sarkozy lose to Socialist rival François Hollande after one tempestuous term in office.
Polls suggest the two mainstream rivals will finish well ahead of the eight other contenders in today's first round, but a predicted abstention rate of around 25 per cent and a strong protest vote could yet confound the polls and create a surprise.
The two finalists will face off in round two on May 6, when Mr Hollande is expected to easily romp home.
