Obama Salutes Troops On Memorial Day, Calls For War Only When ‘Absolutely Necessary’ -- L.A. Times

President Obama laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, marking Memorial Day with a salute to fallen service members and a promise to go to war only with a clear mission, with the support of the nation and when “absolutely necessary.”

Obama spoke to a crowd of several hundred people, many of them family members of troops who had died, at the cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknowns. The president was accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
