Sri Lanka Military Parade Marks 3-Year War Anniversary

Thousands of members of the armed forces are taking part in a parade to mark their victory over Tamil rebels

Sri Lanka Military Parade Marks War Anniversary -- BBC

Sri Lanka is marking the three-year anniversary of the end of its 26-year civil war with a large military parade in the capital, Colombo.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa gave a speech at the event, which commemorates soldiers who fought against Tamil Tiger rebels, or the LTTE.

Critics say the celebratory nature of the victory parade is inappropriate.

The parade comes as the government is reportedly set to free Sarath Fonseka, the man who led the army to victory.

He was jailed for corruption after unsuccessfully challenging Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the presidency in 2010.
