Yemen Moves To Recapture Towns Controlled By Islamist Insurgents -- New York Times
WASHINGTON — The Yemeni government on Monday and Tuesday stepped up a campaign to recapture southern towns from Islamist insurgents, unleashing airstrikes and ground assaults that left dozens of people dead, including some civilians, according to officials and witnesses on the ground.
The fighting intensified just after a visit to Sana, the Yemeni capital, on Sunday by John O. Brennan, President Obama’s counterterrorism adviser, and less than a week after the disclosure of a foiled plot by Al Qaeda’s Yemen-based affiliate to smuggle a suicide bomber aboard a jetliner bound for the United States.
