Growing Tensions Between Armenia And Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Rebels Trade Blame Over Violence, 1 Dead -- Reuters

* Clinton has warned over "broader conflict"
* Violence in previous days killed eight

(Reuters) - Azerbaijan and Armenian-backed rebels traded accusations on Wednesday over cross border violence that killed one person, just days after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned it could lead to regional conflict.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have accused each other of triggering clashes that have now killed a total of nine people on both sides, prompting the worries over a resumption of fighting in a region criss-crossed by energy pipelines to Europe.

My Comment: Both sides are now trading blame .... Armenia warning Azerbaijan .... Azerbaijan warning Armenia .... and U.S. Secretary of State Clinton (who is in the region) warning of a disaster unfolding.

What's my take .... U.S. Sec. of State Clinton is right .... another war in the Caucasus will destabilize the region. While Azerbaijan's military is larger and significantly more modern than Armenia's .... with the Azerbaijan's military chief himself boasting that he would be able to capture contested territories from Armenia in 10 days ....the bottom line is that Armenia has solidified political and military arrangements with both Russia and Iran. Any war between Armenia and Azerbaijan will get these two countries involved .... and Azerbaijan's relations with both Iran and Russia are not cordial.
